Bancroft Nature Discovery Tours
Guided interpretive tours are hosted by the Bancroft & District Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Bancroft & Area Stewardship Council and the following local clubs:
“Local Fish for Local Lakes”
Take a guided tour of the North Hastings Community Fish Hatchery, a state-of-the-art, fish culture facility that is raising a genetically unique strain of lake trout, as well as brook trout, for stocking into local lakes. Learn about the life cycle of a fish, the various stages of the fish rearing process, and what you can do to help enhance local fisheries.
Freymond Lumber Ltd. has been part of the local community since 1946 and we are committed to sustainable forest management and the long term economic health of our area. Take a guided tour of the log yard, sawmill and chipping facility. You will see logs from the local forest manufactured into lumber, wood chips, sawdust and bark.
“Our Natural World”
Join a member of the Bancroft Field Naturalist Club for a presentation and viewing of this endangered bird species who nest by the hundreds in select, protected chimneys. There are only present in the area at select periods during the year.
“Elk in North Hastings”
Since 2000, the North Hastings area has been home to a growing population of the majestic elk. The tour includes a presentation on the successful local restoration program, the current status of elk management, and a guided tour through elk country to view typical elk habitat (NOTE: There is great potential for sightings, but no guarantees as these are wild animals.)
"Gems and Minerals"
Led by a Geologist who will explain the best method of collection for the specific site, help to identify the minerals found and provide information on the geology of the area, as well as make participants aware of interesting natural features, native animals and invasive or indigenous plants.

Please Note: Mineral Collecting Tours have a different admission fees and additional fees are required for specific sites (clearly marked on website).

Register the day of the tour, at 9:00 am at the Bancroft & District Chamber of Commerce office (located at 227 Hastings Street North).
The tours depart at 9:30am sharp. Chimney Swift (Birding) Tours are evening tours, registration is at 7:00pm.
Tours run rain or shine (except in dangerous conditions such as lightening). Participants provide their own transportation to each site following a lead vehicle. Trips average 2-3 hours (Mineral Collecting Tours average 5 hours but you may leave earlier or stay longer). Please come equipped for the weather and elements including proper attire, bug spray, etc. (Safety glasses and closed-in footwear are mandatory equipment for Mineral Tours.) Snacks and drinks are also encouraged.
